DigUp FAQ

Short answers with links to thicker guides and install pages.

Where do I download DigUp?

Use the platform buttons on the home download section: Mac DMG (0.6.1), Windows setup and Linux .deb / AppImage (0.7.0-beta.1). Guides: Mac, Windows, Linux.

Which platforms are supported?

Mac: 0.6.1 stable on Apple Silicon, macOS 14+. Windows and Linux: 0.7.0-beta.1 beta on 64-bit Intel/AMD. See Mac, Windows, and Linux guides. Re-check Releases before you install.

Does DigUp run on Intel Macs?

The DigUp Mac build targets Apple Silicon only. Intel Macs are not supported by that build. Use Windows/Linux beta on compatible PCs if you need those platforms instead.

Is DigUp private? Is there telemetry or an account?

DigUp is designed local-first: indexing and inference run on your machine. Upstream documents no account requirement and no telemetry of your file contents. Expect a first model download and optional update checks you can control. Read the current README privacy section for the definitive wording.

How big is the model download?

About 865 MB on first run (EmbeddingGemma 2 via llama.cpp). On Mac 0.6.1, if the network blocks the download, use Settings → Storage → Use Files…. Details: EmbeddingGemma 2 in DigUp.

How long does indexing take?

Depends on folder size, file types, and CPU/GPU. DigUp shows an estimate after a quick speed check. After the first pass, new files are indexed incrementally. You can schedule indexing hours on Mac (0.6.1 Settings → Folders).

Homebrew or DMG on Mac?

Download the Mac DMG (Homebrew cask not published yet). Step-by-step: Install DigUp on Mac.

What does “beta” mean for Windows and Linux?

0.7.0-beta.1 works but has had far less real-world use than Mac. Expect rough edges. Screenshot OCR text is not in yet; .doc / RAW / SVG are skipped on that beta. Prefer filing issues upstream with logs (e.g. speed.log device line).

How does code search work?

Code indexing is optional — enable it in settings and select repositories. Query with the code: prefix. DigUp is not a full IDE replacement; it jumps to matching lines when code search is enabled.

Should I turn off Spotlight if I install DigUp?

No need. DigUp is additive. Keep Spotlight for names and apps; use DigUp for meaning across modalities. See DigUp vs Spotlight.

Windows says it doesn’t recognize DigUp. Is that normal?

The beta installer is unsigned. SmartScreen may require More info → Run anyway. Only do this for the EXE you downloaded from the Windows download button on this site. Guide: Install on Windows.

How popular is the project?

As of 2026-10-15 the GitHub API reported about 3,716 stars and 252 forks, with Mac 0.6.1 and Win/Linux 0.7.0-beta.1 published. Live counts change — check the repo.
